Investing to Protect Canada's Sovereignty and Security
Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy sends a clear market signal: defence is no longer only a procurement conversation – it is an industrial growth strategy tied to sovereignty, security, supply chains, innovation, and jobs. The federal government is positioning Canadian industry to capture $180B in defence procurement opportunities, $290B in defence-related capital investment, and an estimated $125B in downstream economic benefit by 2035.
For companies in aerospace, defence, security, advanced manufacturing, cyber, AI, robotics, and dual-use technologies, this reinforces why now is the time to scale in Canada. The strategy also highlights stronger domestic participation, a new Defence Investment Agency, and a “Build–Partner–Buy” approach intended to improve long-term demand visibility and strengthen Canadian industrial capability.
What this means for investors and industry partners:
- Stronger long-term demand signal for defence and dual-use capabilities
- Increased focus on Canadian firms, supply chains and innovation commercialization
- New opportunities for SMEs to grow into strategic suppliers
- Greater alignment between defence readiness and economic development outcomes
Taxes, Levies & Incentives
Alberta offers a strong cost advantage for business, including Canada’s lowest provincial corporate tax rate (8%), no provincial sales tax, and a 2% small business tax rate.
Additional local advantages include:
Low off-site levies: Sturgeon Industrial Park (SIP) has the second-lowest off-site development levies in Alberta, significantly lower than many municipalities in the region, including Edmonton and Calgary.
R&D support: Alberta’s Innovation Employment Grant provides up to 20% toward eligible research and development expenditures.
Municipal incentives under review: Sturgeon County is evaluating municipal incentives to help attract aerospace and defence investment.
